Chief justice sanjiv khanna

Justice Sanjiv Khanna is set to become the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) following the retirement of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud in November 2024. His tenure will be relatively brief, lasting only until May 2025 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age. Despite this short period as CJI, Justice Khanna has made a significant impact during his career in the judiciary.

He has delivered several landmark judgments. One of his most notable rulings was on the

**Electoral Bond Scheme**, which he declared unconstitutional in 2024, emphasizing voters' right to information.

Another key judgment was his role in **upholding the abrogation of Article 370**, which removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that it did not undermine India’s federal structure. In the realm of family law, he expanded the Supreme Court’s powers under

**Article 142** by allowing the court to grant divorces on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown, advancing divorce law in India. Additionally, he has contributed to enhancing judicial transparency, notably through his 2019 decision that brought the Office of the Chief Justice of India under the

**Right to Information (RTI) Act

Justice Khanna's focus on transparency, civil liberties, and democratic principles will likely continue to shape important legal reforms during his time as CJI.
